Am I Preparing My Children?

Written on 9:01 AM by Brandon Camp

I don't know about all of you, but there are times that I question myself and whether or not I am doing everything I should as a father. It has been humbling, and at times overwhemling, to make sure I am teaching my children the things they need to know to survive in this world. I do my best. We read scriptures every night, do family prayer, family hug, and family wrestle. We eat dinner together, and I try to sacrifice things I would like to do in favor of spending time with the family. But is it enough?

It is always nice when you receive some validation that your efforts and sacrifices are not a complete waste. The best is when this validation comes unbidden. I recently experienced one of these moments with my daughter Brooklyn.

I had an old mission companion who was on a business trip in Chicago and decided to come up to Madison for a visit. While we were visiting he noticed that we had a Wii and mentioned that he had never played before, so we decided to play a round of bowling. Brooklyn, my three year-old daughter asked if she could join us and I decided it couldn't do any harm. As we bowled, my sense of pride grew as I saw Brooklyn getting strikes and picking up spares. My heart almost bust with pride when the final scores for the round displayed on the screen and I saw that Brooklyn had bowled a 192, defeating both me and my friend.

It was a moment of triumph, a confirmation that I am doing my job as a father. I am not a failure...my legacy will be passed on.

I like that you can pass on your Wii bowling skills to your daughter through family prayer and scripture study. Also, Why don't I have a Wii?

Does that mean I'm neglecting my kids cause we don't have any video games yet? Just kidding! I'd be proud of that too. Instead I'm proud of Aaron and Brian for loving game shows!
